Fitz Pain : "This name," says Sir Egerton Brydges, "was first taken by Robert Fitz Pain, son of Pain Fitz John, and brother of Eustace, ancestor of the Veseys; both sons of John de Burgo, surnamed Monoculus." This Pain, according to Dugdale, "was one of the Chief Counsellors" of Henry I.; and the name of his son must therefore be an interpolation here.
